How long have you worked at 10 Yetis 9 Months

Run us through your day

From day to day the one thing i’m always doing is editing. However what it is that i’m editing is constantly changing and that is why my job never gets dull. The style of video I’m working on completely changes my workflow and therefor my day, because of the creative process required for each different style. For example editing a talking heads video is very different to making a motion graphics video. With a talking heads project my workflow starts by gathering and organising the footage, finding the parts of each clip I want to use. After I have the clips i need the next stage is to cut them together in a way that keeps to audience engaged and allows them to digest the information, this is then followed by colour correcting the footage and cleaning up audio before I add the finishing touches.

If I am working on a motion graphics video the first thing that I have to do is plan out exactly what I want from the different parts of the video and how I want each part to look. This is vital because a motion graphics video starts as nothing and is built from the ground up. From there I begin to work on colour schemes and an initial structure, adding elements in as the project progresses. No two days are ever the same because the videos i work on change so much.

Favourite/proudest piece of work here

My proudest piece of work has to be the Rise & Fall motion graphics advert.

It was a great project because I had complete creative freedom as well as the opportunity to demonstrate my motion graphics ability for the first time. The whole project ran as smoothly as you could hope for from start to finish. This was paramount as the client needed a quick turn around. Because Rise & Fall is a celebrity stocks and shares game we drew a lot of inspiration from the type of gambling adverts you see during the adverts of sporting event. After analysing the adverts I realised they use a lot of strong, often contrasting colours and subtle background animation to keep you engaged despite being heavily text based. We put our own spin on this concept and finished it off with a voiceover that really brought the whole video together. Although I love motion graphics work in general I think this project will stand out in my mind for a very long time to come.

What did you do before working at 10 Yetis?

Before I started work at 10 Yetis I was a Television Production student at the University of Gloucester and then a part time pizza boy. I knew there was more to life than pizza dough and frozen toppings and immediately jumped at the chance to come do an internship here with 10 Yetis gang. I have been pursuing video editing as a hobby since the age of 15 so being able to make it a job was a dream come true.

Funniest Yeti story?

As far as my funniest story i’d have to say the hours I had to spend roaming cheltenham in a big gorilla costume would probably have to steal the spotlight. For a set of adverts I was required to dress up in a giant gorilla costume in public. Unfortunately for me these shoots took place at the height of this years hot weather. The funniest experience I had in the costume was on our biggest shoot, which involved making my way down Cheltenham’s high street to capture peoples reactions to the outfit.

It went far better than we could of hoped for. Within minutes of starting my journey from one end to the other a group of lads latched onto me and burst into a loud energetic rendition of In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins. I continued down the high street but we had not considered that it might be get hot that my glasses would instantaneously steam up, leaving me mostly blind whilst trying to traverse around the busy shoppers. We got some amazing reactions but unfortunately I couldn’t quite see them first hand due to my lack of vision.

If you could have one super hero power, what would it be and why?

I have spent many hours thinking long and hard about this question and I eventually came to the answer that teleportation is the way to go. If you can teleport the uses are endless! No more being late for commitments. No more public transport. Find yourself in an unwanted situation? Not to worry you can just teleport yourself out of there! Not to mention how much it would lower your carbon footprint! It would be the most useful superpower to have in day to day life as well.

Imagine how many desks you’d accidentally break if you had super human strength or how many PC screens you’d ruin with laser eyes! The only downside i could come up with for teleportation is that it would probably make you incredibly lazy.. i think i could live with that though. It seems like a fair trade!

Gun to your head: what karaoke song would you choose?

I don’t sing and especially not when i’m in public. This is because me trying to hit a note has a very similar sound to nails on a chalkboard. With that being said however If it was a life or death situation then there is only one song i’d choose. Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the heart. If i’m doing karaoke i might as well give it my all and go for the ultimate power ballad. Plus if there was ever a song to melt the heart of a gun wielding, karaoke forcing madman it is definitely the Bonnie Tyler classic with its slow build up and emotion finish.
