10 Yetis Examples of Good and Bad Public Relations - Thursday 21st June 2012
Thanks to The Sun, Wella Shockwaves Ultra Strong Rock & Hold Gel Styler has had a decent bit of coverage today, after a "special probe" there identified the hair product as Wayne Rooney's secret weapon.
It's thought that some of England's superstitious players believed the gel was to thank for Rooney's winning performance against Ukraine; taking the team through to the quarter finals of Euro 2012.
Fans were said to have seen Rooney celebrate his last goal by mimicking spraying something onto his hair. It's not just Rooney that benefitted from the £2.65 hair gel allegedly though, as Carroll and Jordan Henderson were said to have used it too.
No doubt sales of that particular hair gel will rocket; either that, or some retailers will say they've seen an increase in sales to get good PR for themselves.
Today's example of bad PR surrounds NatWest bank, after a meltdown of its online banking service which has left millions of customers (including me) unable to move money or pay bills. The bank has said it is experience technical issues which meant a number of customer account balances were not updated.
A backlash on Twitter and a string of angry messages on NatWest's 'ideas' section of the website demonstrate how irritated customers have become over the situation, whilst some angry customers even gathered outside a NatWest branch in Reading.
NatWest have said however that 1,000 branches will open late until 7pm to help as many customers as possible, but it appears that the damage is now done, as many customers threaten to switch banks. Oh dear!
