1 In 10 Have Secret Cash Stash Partner Doesn’t Know About

It would seem that people in relationships aren’t always open about their financial situations, as 1 in 10 Britons admit to having a secret stash of money hidden away that they haven’t told their partner about. The majority explained this was because they were afraid that their partner would try and get them to spend it.

Honesty isn’t always the best policy when it comes to finances for many, according to new research by the UK’s leading discount website; as 1 in 10 Britons in a relationship admit to having a sum of money saved up that their partner isn’t aware of.

www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk conducted the poll as part of ongoing researching into the spending and saving habits of Britons; given the money-saving nature of the website. 1,779 people aged 21 and over from across the UK were polled in the study, each of whom was in a relationship.

When asked, ‘Do you have any money stashed away that your partner is unaware of?’ 12% of those polled said ‘yes’. These respondents were then asked to explain their reasons for keeping a certain amount of money a secret from their other half; and were told they could pick more than one answer if it applied to them.

According to the poll, the top five reasons were as follows;

• Worried partner would try to spend it                       24%
• Want to buy things in secret                                       17%    
• The money is to spend on partner                              11%
• Haven’t got round to telling partner                          9%
• Partner wouldn’t give handouts if they knew             5%

The respondents who had a sum of money secretly stashed away from their partner were asked to estimate how much they had hidden, either at home or in a bank account somewhere. The average amount people in relationships hide from their partner, according to the poll from MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, was £157.00.

When asked, ‘Do you think that your partner has money stashed away that you don’t know about?’ a third, 32%, said ‘yes’. When asked, ‘Does this concern you?’ 61% said that it did. Furthermore, 73% of the respondents who said they kept money a secret from their partner were living together.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“I think it’s quite normal for couples not to share absolutely everything and some people prefer to be discreet when it comes to their finances. When living together, it’s harder to keep things from your other half, so I was surprised that many co-habiting couples had a private stash of cash!

It appears that there isn’t anything too suspicious about people keeping money a secret from their partners though, as many said it was due to the fact the money they had hidden was to be spent on their other half.
