A recent study by the UK’s leading discount website has revealed that the majority of Britons are more likely to insure their mobile phones, houses and cars than themselves. The poll looked into various insurance policies that were available and how many people around the UK took them out.

Research by the UK’s leading discount and voucher code website has revealed that many Britons are more likely to have mobile phone insurance than life insurance, with insuring themselves 6th on most people’s insurance priority list.

www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk polled 2,107 people around the UK as part of research into what financial services they were currently using and which insurance policies people had taken out. Respondents were asked questions on the topic and were required to share their opinions on certain insurance policies that are available.

When asked, ‘How many different insurance policies do you currently have?’ the average number stated by respondents was ‘4.’ The most common type of insurance held by the people polled was ‘car insurance’ with ‘home insurance’ a close second.

More than half, 56%, of the people polled had insurance for their mobile phone, whilst a third, 34%, had an insurance policy to cover a pet of theirs. Less than a quarter, 23%, claimed to currently have life insurance, despite the majority of the people who took part being parents (76%).

MyVoucherCodes.co.uk asked respondents to rank, in order of importance (1 being high and 10 being low), the various insurance policies that were available. When taking into account the average list and how it appeared based on the opinions of those polled, the insurance policies ranked most important (1) to least important (10) were as follows:

  1. Car insurance
  2. Home insurance
  3. Pet insurance
  4. Mobile phone insurance
  5. Credit insurance
  6. Life insurance
  7. Travel insurance
  8. Medical insurance
  9. Contents insurance

10.  Unemployment insurance

Of the respondents who put car insurance above life insurance in terms of priority, the majority claimed it was because car insurance was a ‘legal requirement’. All respondents who placed ‘life insurance’ lower on their list of priorities than ‘pet insurance’ were asked why this was the case, with the majority, 41%, claiming it was ‘more likely’ that something would happen to their pet than themselves.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“Whilst some insurance policies are a legal requirement, for instance in the case of drivers, others should be viewed as just as important. Life insurance is very important, particularly for parents, and whilst it isn’t something that would necessarily benefit the individual, it will add an element of security for loved ones.

As for most people prioritising mobile phone insurance over life insurance, that’s quite shocking! Seeing contents insurance quite far down the list was also a bit of a surprise; just because you only rent a property, it doesn’t mean you should start slacking when it comes to protecting your valuables!
