Rock Star Lottery Launches And Goes Straight In The Record Books

Jun 1st 2010

No high waistbands, no panel of judges, no record companies rubbing their hands with glee, just a chance to win a £1.5m record contract.

A UK music industry guru who was so fed up with seeing bands being ripped off by small, fly-by-night, record labels is heading for the Guinness Book of Records due to him starting a site offering unsigned bands a chance to win a £1.5m recording contract.

www.rockstarlottery.com was launched just two weeks ago and has already had around 200 bands and pop acts sign up and a record beating 1500 members of the public register to vote on which band or artist receives the contract.

Musicians and bands from around the globe have signed up for free and a few of these have already tasted success such as Todd Sharpville from London who opened for Pink when she performed in France in 2005 and Wickhead, widely regarded as South Africa's best rock act.

Once members of the public have registered they can choose to pay £1 for 5 votes, and these votes not only help select which bands go through to the final stages but also what happens to the band that wins in terms of deciding which venues they play, the best songs to go on the album and the best designs for the CD cover.

The closing date for groups or solo artists to enter is July X and then voting will take place to decide the top 250 bands to go through to the final stages.

Once the winner has been selected the profits from the subsequent album sales will be added up and split 50-50 between the winner and one voter who shall be selected at random.

The idea is the brainchild of Steven Pitcher, musician, radio DJ and music producer, he commented, “Rock Star Lottery is simply a chance for one band or a solo artist to receive the record contract of their dreams whilst the people who voted them there and funded the contract also get to decide what happens to the band in the future”.

He continued, “It is a great online community initiative and I never thought that in such a short space of time we would get so many talented musicians signed up from around the world”.

Bands and artists are able to interact with the voters thanks to blogs and message boards on their own individual pages on the site.
