10 Yetis Examples of Good and Bad PR- Friday 17th August 2017

Happy Friday y’all. With the weekend almost upon us, I wanted to bring you some good and bad PR from this week to help while away those last few hours. Do let us know your thoughts in the comments section, and drop me a tweet on @SamSummersPR if you spot any good or bad PR that you think we might be able to use.

Good PR

I’m happy to report that Tesco has updated it’s £3 meal deal!

This is fantastic news for busy workers who need a lunch in a rush, or even school kids who don’t fancy the sandwiches that mum made – and, my favourite of all, for those of us who end up eating our lunch by 10am and need a second lunch to get us through the day.

There are 14 new sandwiches up for grabs, including a Philli Cheese Steak Wrap and Tuna Salad (Sourdough Wrap). There are also 6x new snacks, including a Carrot Cake Bar, Salted Caramel Tart and Free From Chocolate Brownie Bar.

What an exciting time to be alive!

Apparently, this has been in place for a short while now, most of us just haven’t noticed, and this is in no way a response to M&S launching a meal deal that’s cheaper than Boots. Tesco are also still the cheapest out there for a lunchtime meal deal – in terms of the large supermarkets – and this has just upped the game.

Mixed PR

Where you sit on the fence with this one definitely depends on whether or not you like nuts – so instead of picking good or bad PR, I’m giving it mixed and letting you pick your own side.

Nestle have announced that there are going to be some new variations of the Walnut Whip, but things are not as they seem – the new flavours are going to be called Whips (yes, just Whips) and they won't have walnuts on top of them. Apparently this change has come into effect for two reasons; because the cost of walnuts has increased and because they wanted to reach a wider audience.

Personally they’d need to remove the whip bit for me and just have the walnut with chocolate for me to consider buying and eating them – but I am the world’s fussiest eater. Shannon, our Head of PR, is ecstatic that the walnut is being removed. You win some, you lose some.

Bad PR

Ofcom are currently investigating Vodafone who are accused of adding an extra £1 per month to one million contracts that have been taken out with them – affecting anyone who has taken out a contract with them since February of this year.

The fee is for Secure Net software that provides protection to users against harmful websites, and Vodafone claim that users should have been made aware when taking out the contract, as well as receiving texts throughout their contract about this. The first three months are free and after that incurs the cost of £1 per month.

Whilst all great and well, it seems staff haven’t been making staff aware of the additional charge, and it’s nowhere to be seen online when purchasing a phone that way. It may not seem like a lot of money, but that’s £24 over the course of a two-year contract.

According to Vodafone, 70% of users have continued with Secure Net after the free three-month trial, however it’s alleged that the majority of these aren’t even aware of the subscription, let alone that they’re paying for it.

I wouldn’t be happy if I was a Vodafone customer. I don’t even play the lottery because that’s a few quid wasted (I’m never going to win the lottery – I’m not that lucky) and every penny counts! It’ll be interesting to see Ofcom’s results when they come out.
