10 Yetis Examples of Good and Bad PR - Monday 8th October 2018

Afternoon! Fran here, giving you this week’s examples of good and bad PR. Let’s start with the bad…

Bad PR

Pret A Manger is facing yet another backlash after a 2nd person is believed to have died after eating food that didn’t include the correct dietary labels on the packaging.

After the death of 15 year old Natasha Ednan-Laperouse back in 2016 the story came to light – as the baguette she ate contained traces of sesame that she was allergic to, causing Theresa May to call for a review of food labelling laws.

Now, it has come to light that in 2017, Celia Marsh died after eating a flatbread that was supposed to contain a dairy free yogurt that was in fact contaminated with dairy.

It is a shame it has taken 2 deaths for the food labelling standards to be looked into, as if the correct procedures were carried out in the first place, these deaths could have easily been prevented. It is likely that Pret will lose a lot of custom from this and it will be hard to come back from such bad publicity.

Good PR

Banksy carried out a stunt on his famous painting ‘Girl With Balloon’ this week, by installing a shredder to destroy the artwork if it was ever to be sold at auction, which it was for over £1 million.

The stunt soon went viral and although it has been said that he installed it a few years ago, some believe it has been done more recently, and that the shredder would have had to have been remotely activated in order for it to work.

The stunt was a great way to get publicity for both Banksy and Sotheby Contemporary Art Auction. It’s even said that the artwork could now be worth even more money as it going down in history as one of the art world’s greatest ever pranks.
