10 Yetis Examples of Good and Bad PR - Tuesday 28th January 2020

Good and Bad PR from me is a little like the situation with London buses: you wait a long while for one and then two come in quick succession. Anyway, enough of the chit chat, here is this week’s good and bad PR:

Good PR

The first good PR comes from Doctor Who. On Sunday, actress Jo Martin made her first appearance on the show; fans were delighted to find out that she is the doctor. She is the second female Doctor and the first black Time Lord. As you may expect, fans were delighted to see this iconic moment happen. Doctor Who is the type of programme that will always have its cult following, but with the new Doctor in place this could attract a new audience.

What we like even more is that scenes from the latest episode was filmed in our great city – Gloucester! The Cathedral has been a key point for many films and TV shows as a location, and this isn’t the first time Doctor Who has come to visit.

The final piece of good PR comes from Mattel for their latest release of Barbie dolls. What’s so special with the new range of dolls is that they focus on ‘a multi-dimensional view of beauty’ and include dolls that have no hair, vitiligo (having worked with a dermatologist) prosthetic limbs and more, . They will be released throughout 2020 and the aim of this new line is to redefine what it means to be a Barbie, allowing children to play out more stories they see in the world around them. This is great from Mattel and will prevent so many children feeling pressure to fit in with the perceived ‘perfect appearance’.

Bad PR

Our first bit of bad PR comes from the Catalans Dragons… they have recently confirmed the signing of former Australia player, Israel Folau. He was released by Australia in April for writing homophobic posts on social media and was left without a club, but French club Catalans Dragons made the difficult decision of signing him. The chief of the Super League has said that there are strict guidelines in place to ensure he doesn’t tweet similar things to what got him in trouble initially, but time will tell. This is a head-scratching decision and one the club is being talked about negatively for right now.

The final instalment of bad PR comes from Tesco and Cow & Gate who have had to recall as many as 15x products due as a ‘precautionary measure’ due to concerns the jars had been tampered with. In a released statement consumers were told to take all listed products back into the stores and not to feed them to their babies. This could be damaging to the Cow & Gate brand in the short term, but it probably won’t come have much of an affect in the long run.
