Facebook Restrictions, Netflix Gaming, WhatsApp Hackers And Insta Shop - 10Y Insights Blog

Facebook Restrictions, Netflix Gaming, WhatsApp Hackers And Insta Shop.

This weeks blog includes Facebook's new restrictions, Netflix attempt to step into the gaming community, how to beat the hackers on WhatAapp and the first Instagram x ecommerce account.

Facebook’s act on terrorism

The New Zealand terrorist attack that was live streamed via Facebook Live has lead to the tech giant taking measures to protect its users from being exposed to further malicious or disturbing content.

In Facebook's F8 developer conference late last month, it announced that it would be doubling down on all things privacy related in an attempt to reinvent its reputation. The app has previously had minimal restrictions for the usability for its features, however recent issues such as the terrorist attack in New Zealand has lead to Facebook acting on this matter. For those of you that were unaware of the incident, a gunman used Facebook’s Live feature to narrate and live stream his torturous act to millions. Guy Rosen, Facebook’s VP of integrity, commented in response to the attack and mentioned they have “been reviewing what more it can do to limit its services from being used to cause harm or spread hate”.

Previously, Facebook’s policy was more lenient on its posts that went against their guidelines, it used to simply take down each post that violated its community standards. If the users continued their pattern of violations, the app would then block them from using its platform. As of now, users who break certain rules such as its ‘Dangerous Individuals and Organisations Policy’ will now be restricted from using Facebook Live. This ‘One Strike Policy’ is to be taken seriously as the restrictions can spread to people who share these links onto their own pages.

So, even though I know you probably will. Think twice before sharing any suspicious, harmful or hateful content. You too could be on the banned list.

Netflix tease E3 2019 gaming announcements

“Bring your favourite shows to life.”

Netflix and gaming are two words that have slowly started to be mentioned in the same sentence recently, with the video streaming platform implementing new features such as its interactive videos. The likes of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Bear Grylls’ You vs. Wild have lead the way for industry movement in the gaming/video community.

Netflix have people's heads turned at the moment as it announced that it will have a panel at the latest E3 Gaming Conference. E3 is the elite yearly gaming exhibition, which includes computer gaming and other related products. The world's top talents within the gaming industry will attend the Los Angeles Convention Center on June 11-13. Now, Netflix has decided to dive into the unknown for for video streaming platforms.

The studio has dropped a few sly hints of what could be revealed in June. One being a new adaptation to one of its most popular fantasy-thriller series, Stranger Things. The new season 3 could be a real game changer in the video/gaming realm. It also announced that “there's plenty more to come” with its new direction to turn its most popular shows into video games.

With rumours now flying around of how Netflix will merge together its video and gaming platform, a few suggestions have gained real traction. It could continue with its narrative-driven experiences, like the previously discussed Black Mirror;Bandersnatch. Another suggestion could be the introduction of console/mobile game releases based on Netflix Original properties.

The potential for Netflix to flourish in the gaming community is immense. Picture this, running around NYC ruling the drug game as Ghost from Power or even having supernatural abilities to fight the evil in the world in Umbrella Academy. I cannot wait to see how it all pans out!

WhatsApp has been hacked!

A weak point in the popular Facebook-owned messaging service has been targeted by hackers in the latest episode of Facebook’s battle to reinvent its reputation around privacy.

WhatsApp is calling for its users to update the app immediately. The latest bug has allowed hackers to take over your mobile device by simply calling your phone, whether or not it's been answered. Hackers could then install spyware through an infected voice call. They will then have access to the devices camera and microphone to perform bad-natured activities.

What's worrying about this incident is there is no way as of yet to track how many phones have been affected. If you are yet to receive WhatsApp calls or dropped calls from unknown phone numbers then you are likely to have not been targeted, yet. Facebook acted on this incident by pushing out a update on WhatsApp to restrict the issue spreading further. If it hasn’t happened automatically, the app strongly advises users to go through to your application store and download the update manually.

The latest version of WhatsApp is always stated on its website. Make sure you’re protected, update the app!

Instagram launches @shop account

Instagram hinted it would take a bold step into the e-commerce world in its F8 conference last month. Weeks later it launches its beta account to promote this feature. The account @Shop was made by Instagram’s internal team to promote real time indicators of current trends on the app. Each of its post features its new product tags that can now navigate straight onto an Insta store to purchase the product.

Brands now have the ability to track the leverage of individual influencer and how it affects their brand. Allowing true transparency for companies to view the ROI per influencer. This feature is only available to a select few as it stands, with Instagram looking to make it available for its users after the beta period.

The question is, how will this affect brands website traffic as purchasing will be made through another source. There will always be a space for websites but with social media getting stronger by the day, it would mean a decreased interaction to organic website intercommunication.
