Wimbledon on Twitter, Instagram negativity, Facebook Wifi and Snapchat updates - Social Media News - Insight

Wimbledon streaming live on twitter

Twitter has partnered up with the Wimbledon Championship for another win, for the second year in a row. Streaming the Wimbledon Channel for its users.

Wimbledon is in full flow and anyone who loves tennis can be excited about twitter too. After testing out the live streaming feature last year, Twitter has teamed up with The All England Club to bring a live stream of The Wimbledon Channel throughout this year’s tournament.

Now, you still don’t get to see all the tournament but you do get; interviews, behind-the-scenes, news, and a little bit of the action. Great right, well not for those of you living in Italy, Germany, Spain or Austria! But if you’re watching from elsewhere then go ahead and make the most of it.

Instagram fights offensive comments and spam

Instagram has launched two new tools that can block out offensive comments and spam.

Instagram may have less trolls and spammers than Facebook and twitter, but the threat of spamming content and negative comments is still present. And the only way to stop this content being published is to develop tools to filter out toxic comments and inappropriate content. Last year Instagram started testing the ability for users to block comments, and then the feature came out later that year. Now, Instagram is introducing two new tools to “help keep Instagram a safe place for businesses to express themselves and share their stories with the world.”

A new filter launched last week, blocks offensive comments in posts or live videos. This does not change the way comments can usually be reported, deleted, or turned off. The filter itself can also be turned off by accessing the settings menu from your Instagram profile. Instagram has said that the filter will be available in English at first, but more languages will come over time.

The second feature looks “for any obvious spam in comments, blocking it from your posts and live videos.” The spam filter uses machine learning that has been taught by Instagram’s team to spot out offensive and spam comments, therefore brands and influencers don’t have to see the comments. The two new tools echo the features introduced by Facebook to identify and filter out spam, clickbait and offensive content.

Facebooks Find WIFI goes global

Facebook has announced that its “Find WIFI” feature is going global and that it will soon be on the market and available to all their mobile app users around the world.

Facebook began testing the new feature out in November last year, helping users find free WIFI hot spots near to them. If you’re like me (and the rest of the population) and are constantly running out of mobile data, then the feature is perfect for you, it lists all the free locations on a map and even gives you directions to the hot spots! The feature looks to be being made available shortly as Facebook announced all mobile app users will make use of the feature, on IOS and Android. You may already have the feature, if you want to check, just check the menu on your app. There is one catch though, you will have to allow the app to access your location whenever you want to use the feature.

The new feature also has many benefits for business, allowing them to create engagement with users around the area. Facebook has been working with Cisco and Netgear to offer free WIFI if users check in to a location using their platform. They have been working on connecting offline sales to online actions, and companies will be able to receive users’ data from the check-ins too.

Snapchat revitalised

Snapchat has dropped its biggest update to date, introducing three new features which can change the way people and businesses use the app.

According to reports, two of the updates involve the creative side of the platform, while the other change alters the way users interact with content. The first app is called backdrops which allows users to create animated backgrounds to their snaps. And Snapchat will apparently be releasing new Backdrops every day for its users to explore and use, and for advertisers to promote their products with.

The second update will give users the ability to play with and create voice effects without having to use the filters. The voice changers as part of the filters were extremely popular amongst the Snapchat community, so it only makes sense that the filter and voices have been split. Soon, users will get to record their snaps, and tapping on the speaker icon will allow them to change and listen to their new modified voices in it.

The third change is something businesses should really be taking a note of. It lets Snapchatter’s add links to their stories and snaps. This means that influencers and advertisers will have an entirely new avenue to work with, and snapchat is clearly keeping up with its competition by also offering to track the performances of their snaps.
