10 Yetis Insight Blog - Best of the Christmas adverts (2015 so far)

There will undoubtedly be some Scrooge’s out there might completely hate this festive themed post, claiming it’s still way too early to be thinking about Christmas when it is still more than a month away. Having said that, in my mind any point in November equate to an absolutely acceptable time to start celebrating the fact that the festive season is upon us.

Christmas is just amazing, it brings family and friends together but it’s also a great excuse to have at least twelve glasses of wine with one meal. As well as the turkey, the presents and the drink another thing we love about Christmas here in the 10 Yetis office are, of course, the Christmas adverts and campaigns.

There are always some fierce competitors in the Christmas advert wars and this year is no exception. With each brand carrying their own unique charm and story, there have been tears, smiles and laughter watching them all. There also definitely seems to be a theme amongst most of the adverts this year, with compassion and kindness towards others being prevalent in almost all of them.

Anyway without further delay, let’s have a look at some of the Christmassy advert highlights from this year so far. These aren’t in a specific order or anything; I’m only including the ones I think have been best from the year so far so just assume those that haven’t been included would be bottom of my list.

John Lewis – Man on the moon

John Lewis seems to do a solid job every year at making me tear up and become an emotional mess, and this year was no exception. Although not their most popular festive advert by any means; by knowing John Lewis paired with Age UK to raise awareness of loneliness this Christmas it works perfectly.

It depicts a man, living on the moon, without family and friends and watching the Earth longingly. Meanwhile a young girl on Earth looks at the moon through her ridiculously powerful telescope and sees the man, looking sad as he will be alone this Christmas. The advert ends in a present the young girl brought, landing on the moon via balloon and the old man opening it, only to discover it’s a telescope.

Here in the office we think it could have made more people tear up and maybe been more poignant if the advert was more realistic and the man on the moon actually managed to make it down to earth to enjoy Christmas with others for himself, but it’s still a great advert. Here it is in all its glory:

Sainsburys - Mog’s Christmas Calamity

I love cats and anything feline related, so I was always going to love this advert and so do many in the office here, even the dog people! Cats can be a nuisance sometimes but they can be very sweet and this advert depicts the animal perfectly. He destroys the house but saves Christmas (kind of) at the same time.

The advert ends with the house destroyed after the cat sets fire to the kitchen (but not before he accidentally calls 999, so it all sort of balances out). This doesn’t sound very Christmassy, but of course the neighbours rally around the family and the cat and help them clean the house up while also sharing their Christmas with the distressed family.

Now there are quite a few plot holes with this ad, I doubt many cats would call 999, even by accident and I also have to question where the family was when the turkey began to burn but all in all this is an enjoyable ad. You can have a look at it here.

T.K. Maxx

I only saw this advert for the first time last night but I loved it. It’s endearing, heartfelt and everything Christmas should feel like. Although the message behind the advert is that you should stop being stingy and use your pocket change to buy a present for someone who you might not have thought about buying a present for before and it’s heavily implied that you should be getting this extra present from TK Maxx, if you try and look past this blatant advertisement (I guess it is an advert so it is acceptable) the Christmas spirit is strong in this minute long clip. You can watch this here.

Lidl – Christmas School

This advert is a little bit different from the others; it doesn’t have anything about giving to others this Christmas but instead just depicts normal folk attending Christmas school as they try to learn how to achieve the best possible Christmas.

The classes include left over sandwich making, Christmas pudding lighting and acting when you receive a bad present.

You can check out this fun advert here.

Duracell - Battle for Christmas Morning

And finally a Christmas advert that isn’t really a Christmas advert at all. Well it is, but it’s more focused on another big event which is coming up around Christmas, the day which Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits the big screens here in the UK. Now I might be a little bit biased putting this on the blog as I have to admit I am a huge Star wars fan, but I also think it’s very clever of Duracell to use this as a way to advertise their batteries around Christmas.

I won’t talk too much about it as I have already done a good PR on the advert but if you would like to check it out, you can do so by clicking on the following:
