10 Yetis Examples of Good and Bad PR- Friday 8th September 2017

Happy Friday y’all. I’ve compiled a list of my favourite good and bad PR stories from this week so you don’t have to hunt around – how handy.

Good PR

Great news for singletons, if you’ve got the dating app, Bumble, on your phone, you can nab yourself a free milkshake at Gourmet Burger Kitchen!

GBK have finally launched a brunch burger menu, including ‘Dawn Horn’, ‘The Chav’ and the ‘Early Riser’ (LOL, what great names!) and, to top it off they’ve teamed up with Bumble to offer free milkshakes.

All you’ve got to do is, when trying out the new brunch menu (with a date or a friend), is show the staff that you have the Bumble app on your phone. Whilst the shakes are free, it’s not the usual ones, no… they’ve even launched some new ones just for the brunch menu; a cornflake one, one that tastes like Earl Grey and even one that is a blend of ice cream and Marmite. Erm… I’m not in a rush to try any of these, but you can’t complain when they’re free.

This is currently being trialled in 11 GBK locations; Belsize Park, Brighton, Brighton Marina, Chiswick, Guildford, Liverpool, Norwich, Portobello, Spitalfields, Wimbledon and York. Hopefully it’ll be a huge success and will soon be rolled out across all locations.

Bad PR

We all know that drinks from the likes of Costa and Starbucks contain a lot of sugar – there’s no denying that, it’s in the news constantly. But what you may not realise is that this doesn’t just apply to your fancy drinks, it’s the normal ones too – as type one diabetic, Liz Adams recently found out.

Having been a type one diabetic for 28 years, there’s no doubt in my mind that Liz knows what she can and can’t have in order to stay safe and be healthy.

Last week, stopping at the services, Liz ordered herself a ‘grande’ Latte from Starbucks only to find herself coming over dizzy, with headaches – both symptoms that her blood sugar levels were spiking. And not just a little either – they went from 6.5mmol/L to an insane 26/9mmol/L – I might not fully understand the letters and words associated to it, but you can tell by the numbers that’s pretty bad! So bad, she had to take use two corrective shots to prevent herself from falling into a coma.

Basically, it turned out that this Latte had a whopping 18g of sugar in – the equivalent of half a can of coke / 20% of a woman’s recommended daily intake. For most of us, that would be one hell of a sugar high, for Liz that could’ve killed her.

She’s now urging Starbucks to make their sugar content more explicit to customers, preventing this from happening to someone else. Unfortunately though, it doesn’t look as though Starbucks will take this advice, telling her that sugar contents are available on the app and on their website (not ideal, might I add, for someone in store who doesn’t have access to the internet – or simply can’t be bothered to pull the app up).

McDonalds made changes over the years, incorporating nutritional notes on their packaging, why can’t Starbucks make small changes ensuring everyone is aware of their insane sugar levels?!
