10 Yetis Insight Blog - The Best PR Stunts Involving Her Majesty The Queen

In case you missed it, the Queen turned 90 this week; which means she's been reigning over us for almost 65 years. She was my age (25 years young) when her coronation took place, so she's had a heck of a lot of responsibility for a really long time.

Still, her royal duties are not all curtseys and corgis and the Queen often ends up in the papers for more random reasons. Brands piggyback on royal news to get PR coverage and exposure too, so we thought we'd round up some of the best PR stunts that have in some way related to Her Maj, whether it's through the use of a lookalike, royal connotations or certain situations that have involved the Queen herself. What better way to celebrate her 90th birthday than dedicate a blog post to Her Royal Highness?

Here it goes...

London 2012 Olympics

Even if you didn't watch the London 2012 Olympics, you probably heard about the opening ceremony in some way. To say it was a spectacle would be a bit of an understatement. It was truly glorious. The best part? The Queen parachuting into the stadium with James Bond. OK, so she didn't actually do it... a stunt man did. However, her acting debut was a four minute video clip set in her private Buckingham Palace study, in which she briefs Bond (Daniel Craig) about a "secret" mission. She then leaves her Corgis behind and climbs into a helicopter, which then cut to the parachute scene. In case you missed it, here it is...

Social Media Manager

Most of us spend our time on social media Instagram-ing our desserts to make our friends jealous and looking at the Facebook pages of strangers because their lives look better than ours. But what if you could actually DO the social media for the Royal Family? Well, on the official website of the British Monarchy, a job role of this ilk is being advertised. The Head of Digital Engagement will be paid £50,000 per year to run Twitter accounts like @ClarenceHouse, @BritishMonarchy and @KensingtonRoyal and will be in charge of websites and other social media acconts with a huge worldwide audience. No pressure. They'll work from Buckingham Palace, get 33 days holidays AND free lunch. Where do we sign? Just imagine being in charge of the social media strategy for the Royal Family! We wouldn't mind being the social media agency to take that on... ya know, if we could persuade the powers-that-be to outsource activity #justsaying.

Kellogg's

Back in September 2015, to celebrate the fact that Queen Elizabeth II had become the longest-serving monarch to ever reign in the UK, cereal makers Kellogg's created 'Queen Flakes' (basically, jazzed up Special K flakes with macadamia nuts and "edible jewels"). They were created because the author of 'At Home with the Queen' told PEOPLE magazine that an average day for Her Majesty included eating a bowl of cornflakes.

If You Were The Queen...

Ever wondered what the Queen was doing when she was your age? *Spoiler alert* it probably wasn't watching Netflix back to back and eating her body weight in takeaway pizza like us common folk. But, hey, who knows? The talented team over at Passion Digital created the microsite keepingupwiththequeen.com (no longer live) which enables you to input your age and it gives you information on, well, what she was doing at your age. Cool, huh? It has generated a tonne of coverage, including countless national news websites and, my current favourite go-to site for cool stories, Mashable.

Queen of Parts

National mechanics chain Kwik Fit teamed up with artist David Parfitt to create a portrait of the queen made of car parts; aptly names the 'Queen of Parts'. It was assembled by Kwik Fit staff, under the guidance of the artist and included 800 separate pieces and was 3m by 2.5m, weighing in at 115kg. A really nice touch was that the crown was made of indicator and brake lights from an Austin K2, which was a type of military truck used by the Queen in 1945 when she did mechanical training in the British Army, aged just 18, for the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service.
