10 Yetis Insight Blog – The Best PR Stunts Involving The 2016 UEFA European Championship

Whether you're a football fan or not, you'll know that the 2016 EUFA European Championship (Euros) is underway and that it has more countries than ever participating this year. You may have watched a match or two (or all, if that's your thing) and you most likely have heard about all of the fighting & drama, you may even have watched a video or two of the fans in high spirits (there are tonnes, and they're great viewing!). What you may not have thought about is just how many brands will use this as the perfect event to piggyback on and get their name into the media for their own PR stunts.

Here's a few that I really liked, but I bet that after reading this you'll start to notice them everywhere...

Facebook lets you customise your profile picture

The social media network is letting users show their support during the Euros by allowing you to customise your profile picture with the flag of the country that you’re supporting.

With 24 countries competing in the Euros for the first time, ever, there’s a lot of choice, and you’re obviously not limited to just the one. Why not chance your flag for each game that you watch? Or you can of course be loyal and select the flag for your competing country (that is, until they’re knocked out – then delete it and pretend it never happened).

Licor Beirão apologises to Harry Kane

In a pre-Euros match between England and Portugal, Bruno Alves was seen fly-kicking Harry Kane in the head/face in front of an advertising board for Licor Beirão, which has gone on to be shown over and over again, all around the world.

The liqueur company have whacked together a short apology video to Harry Kane, letting him know that “Even though we didn’t plan, it looked like we sponsored it” and offering him a handwritten card and a bottle of their finest which is “one with a much softer kick. And as you’ll find, that will not leave you with a nasty headache”. The video ends with “P.S. this is a yellow card only because of our logo. Don’t worry. We all agree it should be red.” – it’s definitely worth a watch, even for those of you not keen on football.

Currys PC World ‘Ultimate Home of Football’

Getting into the football spirit, Currys PC World have converted a Winnebago into the ‘Ultimate Home of Football’ complete with the very best of tech goodies; a 65” Samsung screen, luxury seating, a kitchen and a separate room just for watching computer games.

The camper van is touring the UK and Ireland during the Euros, with fans able to enter a competition to win the chance to watch one of the 42 matches on board with up to 8x friends. Well, it’s got to be better that trying to find a seat in an overpacked, bustling pub, right?

Simply head over to their website, enter your details and keep your fingers & toes crossed.

And there is always, without fail, one or two brands that try to piggyback events but don’t really have a clue what they’re doing.

Take Iceland calling out Nandos on Twitter…

When Iceland scored against Portugal in the Euros recently the social media team for Iceland decided to tweet Nandos “Unlucky lads…”, only for the Nandos social media team to reply that the company isn’t Portugese, but in fact originates from South Africa, replying “We’re South African… this is awkward.”

Before tweeting, Iceland’s social media team should’ve checked their facts. Alhough we can see where they’re coming from, what with Nandos selling Portugese flame-grilled peri-peri chicken (which was kindly pointed out by Burger & Lobster, who waded into the Twitter debacle).

Still, Iceland came away blushed. A simple fact check would’ve saved them the embarrassment.
