10 Yetis Insight - Social Media Round Up - Facebook Moments, Instagram Logo, Periscope Updates & Twitter Connect

Hey, here we are again with a quick social media round-up of the week! We’re tackling all the big movers and shakers in this week’s edition. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Periscope! Read on to get in the know.

Facebook Moments

First up, hot of the press is the news that Facebook moments has finally launched in Canada and EU countries. It’s been nearly a whole year since the moments app launched in the US and over the rest of the world, so it’s been a bit of a wait. The wait was due to Facebook having to make changes for these territories due to their privacy laws.

In case you’ve forgotten what the app is, as many people have, it’s an app which syncs your camera gallery with Facebook and uses facial recognition to tag your friends in photos and then allows you to share the photos with those specific friends; the app also supports video.

Because of the privacy laws here in the EU and in Canada the facial recognition isn’t a full feature, instead it uses an ‘object recognition’ technology which does much the same, except rather than directly recognising faces it groups photos together that have similarities. Once these are grouped together you have to tell the app who the people are in the app, therefore getting around the privacy laws. All other features remain the same.

It’s available as of today on iOS and Android!

Instagram’s new logo

I don’t know how you would have missed this one, it’s been in nearly every news outlet I can think of! In case you did miss it, Instagram and it’s whole family of apps have brand new logos. Instead of the polaroid inspired camera that Instagram had before there is a flattened a simplified logo which features an orangey-pinky-blue gradient with a simple white camera outline on top of it. The other apps in the family, Boomerang, Layout and Hyperlapse feature white backgrounds with simplified versions of their previous logos on top in the same gradient colours. There has been a lot of back and forth about the new logo, but the general consensus is that, really, it’s not that bad. And it’s not.

Periscope updates

This week Periscope announced some new updates for the app which include searches, drone broadcasting and the option to save broadcasts past the usual 24 hour limit. The new search option is a welcome to the app, it’s previously been fairly difficult to find streams that you are actually interested in, unless of course you’re following a user. The addition of the search function will allow users to search for broadcasts by title or topic. There will also be specific topics already listed in the search section of the app to help you find what you are interested in.

The new drone capabilities are very cool. You obviously have to have a supported drone and be able to connect your iPhone to the drone remote but once that’s done you can effortlessly stream through Periscope. Not only that but you can easily switch between the drone camera and the iPhone camera mid-broadcast as well as being able to sketch on the broadcast to point out particular sights. Periscope says: “Anyone with an iPhone and a supported DJI drone will be able to start broadcasting in the coming weeks.”

Finally you can now save your Periscope broadcasts longer than 24 hours on the site. They will automatically be saved on Periscope and Twitter with comments and hearts, and are easily delete-able should you change your mind. Also this will soon be a default setting, so make sure to change your settings should you not want this to happen with your broadcasts.

Twitters connect tab

Our final bit of news from the week is that Twitter has added a new ‘Connect’ tab, this is basically an extension of the ‘who to follow’ section that you may be familiar with. It aims to match you up with users who you may be interested in. Seemingly another move to make Twitter more accessible and understandable for new users.

That’s all folks! See you next week!
