10 Yetis - Weekly Dose of Social - Lad Bible App, Facebook live stream/collage & more...

So this week in Social Media has not been one of huge revelations but nevertheless here is this week’s dose of social happenings. Featuring Lad bible, Google, an interesting awareness campaign and some Facebook newsroom updates. The

Lad bible are well and truly taking over the world. First nearly all of their posts on Facebook go viral with thousands of shares and comments. Now they’ve launched their new app on the iOS store and it’s topped the app store charts in only 24 hours. The app overtook downloads of apps from the likes of the BBC and the Guardian to take the top spot. They’ve got it spot on with their audience, offering their irreverent take on current affairs and viral content. TO help promote the release of the app they released a helium balloon with a go pro attached up to space and they will release the video on the app and site soon.

Chief executive of The Lad Bible, Solly Solomou, said: “We wanted to go the extra mile with our debut app launch and where better than space? The Russians sent a dog into space, Nasa sent a monkey to space. At The Lad Bible, we sent our app into space. Well, near space.”

The Lad Bible claims to have half of the UK’s male 18-24 year olds in its readership as well as 20% of women in the same age and country demographic. The app marks a strong move away from their original platform of Facebook. It remains to be seen if the app will be as popular as the Facebook page, especially with the extra level added before sharing is available. .

A new Brazilian awareness campaign brings rude and racist comments made online to the real-life neighbourhoods of the comment posters. The campaign sees billboards in specific neighbourhoods being taken over by comments posted on social media sites. The names and photographs have been blurred out to preserve anonymity but many believe they should be named and shamed. Hopefully the very fact they will be able to see their mean comments in their own neighbourhood will make them re-question their thoughts before they post their comments again.

"Virtual racism, real consequences," is the name of the campaign and you can read more about it here: http://www.racismovirtual.com.br/

Facebook has added a new feature which screams periscope at me. The new feature allows you to live stream on Facebook, sharing moments with friends and family as they are happening. The feature is currently being rolled out slowly with a few users in the US on iPhones getting the update first. The feature will be simple to use; by taping on update status and then selecting the ‘live video’ icon you will instantly be able to share what you are doing with others on Facebook. Before you go live you can select an audience who you want to stream to and add in a short message about the video you are about to stream. During your broadcast you can see who has tuned in and real time comments. Sound familiar yet?!

When your broadcast ends the video will be saved on your timeline like any other video and you can decide whether to delete it or to keep it there for others to watch later. You can discover others’ video in your newsfeed like you would with other videos. Whilst you are watching a video there will be a subscribe button available to you which will allow you to get a notification each time that person goes live again.

Facebook has also added another new feature, and this one is collages. The feature groups photos that were taken at the same place and time into a scrolling and moving collage. Again a familiar sounding feature, if you’ve ever seen or used Google Photo’s moments. Read more about both of these new features on Facebook’s Newsroom: https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2015/12/introducing-live-video-and-collages/
