International Women’s Day Stunts That Inspire Us – 10 Yetis Insight Blog

Happy International Women’s Day everyone!

Today is a day where we celebrate all of the amazing feats and triumphs of ladies across the globe and commemorate the struggles that women went through, and continue to go through, to achieve equal rights.

It’s an important day which holds meaning to billions of people and thus it should be celebrated accordingly.

Of course, with any monumental international day comes a handful of stunts which brands conjure up to help promote the occasion (as well as their product, of course.)

Here are a few that us Yetis think stood out from the crowd...

#WeSeeEqual

Not all stunts actually happen on the day, with some brands choosing to launch campaigns ahead of monumental occasions which is exactly what Procter & Gamble (P&G) did this year for International Women’s Day.

They decided to launch a video that tears down previous stereotypes by showing snippets of videos showing women and men defying traditional and archaic gender roles followed by statements like, “Butts don’t care who kick them.” and “Science doesn’t care who studies it.”

The video ends with the statement “At P&G #WeSeeEqual” and logos of their brands including always, Ariel and Pampers.

You can view the video below:

On a side note in 2014, the P&G brand revealed their campaign “Like a Girl” which aimed to break stereotypes and empower women across the globe. Since then P&G reported that 76% of their consumers now consider the term “like a girl” to be a positive phrase compared to 19% before.

Fearless Girl

One of my personal favourite stunts for this year’s International Women’s Day is a sculpture of a little girl which has been erected on Wall Street opposite the well-known Charging Bull bronze statue.

The artwork was created by artist Kristen Visbal in collaboration with advertising agency McCann New York and their client State Street Global Advisors.

The figure depicts a fearless girl standing opposite the ferocious looking animal with her hands on her hips and her head held high. You go girl!

State Street have said on the installation that it is “bringing the power of women in leadership to life – right here in the centre of our financial markets.”

The statue of the young girl will be staying for at least a month (hopefully!), but I know I’m not alone in hoping that she will become a permanent feature on Wall Street.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

A new children’s book that has set out to kick gender stereotypes in the butt has raised more than $600,000 (£493,320) on Kickstarter in an extremely quick amount of time.

The creators Elena Favilla and Francesca Cavallo, who are also the co-founders of children’s media company Timbuktu Labs, shared a video on the 6th on Facebook which depicted a mother and daughter removing children books from shelves.

First they removed the books with zero male characters which led to just 3 books having to be removed. Then they removed the books with zero female characters. This led to them removing 76 books. A huge leap. They then removed the books where female characters do not have a speaking role – 141 books were removed.

Finally they removed all of the remaining books that were about princesses (whose goal was just to wait for her prince). This led to most of the already dwindling collection of books to be basically completely cleared out.

Elena and Francesca want daughters across the world to get more out of their reading material so they launched the Kickstarter to have their book Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls published. The book contains 100 real life stories of women who have achieved amazing things and have, or are currently, changing the course of history.

They want young girls to aspire to be more and who doesn’t want to get behind that message?!?!

Snapchat Filters

Snapchat has also decided to make its own mark on this year’s International Women’s Day by creating three animated filters celebrating women.

The app released the lenses at 8am this morning and they will be available for 24 hours.

The lenses celebrate Marie Curie, Frida Kahlo and Rose Parks and are all animated to celebrate each of their feats.

Kahlo’s filter applies her iconic full brow, flower crown and bright lipstick to your face. Marie Curie’s filter adds test tubes to the edge of your photo and Rosa Parks filter pops a hat and glasses onto your face alongside the quote “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.”

We love all three of them in the office! Here is me repping the Marie Curie filter:

Google

As with many international and national holidays, Google has celebrated with a doodle.

Today’s doodle takes the opportunity to celebrate female pioneers who have helped pave the way for women today.

The search tool giant decided to doodle images of 13 of the most remarkable women in history, some of whom are household names, others included some might not even recognise, but each have pursued a wide range of passions and professions and made a mark on the world in some way or another.
